Collings CJ German Spruce and Indian Rosewood with No Tongue Brace and Varnish
The Collings Jumbo, or CJ, is Collings' version of the classic slope-shouldered dreadnought, a shape that has enjoyed renewed popularity in recent years. While the Collings CJ is similar in width and depth to the traditional dreadnought, it has a distinctly different tone. Despite its large size this model works well with the optional shorter string scale, resulting in a somewhat percussive bottom end ideal for acoustic blues or other styles that benefit from a more controlled bass response. Of all the Collings body shapes, this is the one most often requested with a sunburst top finish, as this guitar beautifully demonstrates.
This gorgeous Collings CJ features a custom German Spruce top with a custom full body sunburst, combined with Indian Rosewood back and sides. This is an absolutely wonderful sounding instrument standing up to flatpicking, fingerpicks, and bare fingers alike and a shop favorite here at Artisan, especially matched with Indian Rosewood. German Spruce is one of the most versatile tonewoods, offering the perfect balance between responsiveness and headroom. The beautiful Indian Rosewood back and sides bring the guitar balance and warmth. This set of Indian Rosewood not only looks absolutely stunning.. it sounds incredible!
Thinner than nitrocellulose lacquer, the custom varnish finish is more flexible and allows the wood to resonate more, significantly smoothing out the mids and highs while extending the low end considerably. The tonal qualities produced by the varnish finish are amazing, especially when compared side by side to a guitar without it.
This Collings CJ is simply appointed in a grained ivoroid bound body, an ebony fretboard and headstock overlay, finished off with Nickel Waverly tuners with Ebony buttons. Additionally, it has a tigerstripe pickguard and double bound fingerboard and peghead. The 1 11/16" standard nut width has been upgraded to a 1 3/4" nut for easier fingering of chord shapes.
We are also a big fan of leaving the tongue brace out of these instruments. As people search for the mythical tone of old guitars, this brace comes into scrutiny. Martin added the tongue brace in 1940 and it has become standard every since. The absence of a tongue brace frees the top to allow enhanced vibration and results in a richer, fuller, tone with more low end resonance. It is speculated that Martin added the brace to prevent top cracking, but the years have proven this to have been unnecessary and actually decreases resonation.
