Collings CJ Mh A SS SB Adirondack and Mahogany Short Scale and Custom Satin Sunburst ID-6942
Collings CJ Mh A SS SB Adirondack and Mahogany Short Scale and Custom Satin Sunburst
The Collings Jumbo, or CJ, is Collings' version of the classic slope-shouldered dreadnought, modeled closely after a pre-war J45, a shape that has enjoyed renewed popularity in recent years. While the Collings CJ is similar in width and depth to the traditional dreadnought, it has a distinctly different tone. Despite its large size this model works well with the optional shorter string scale, resulting in a somewhat percussive bottom end ideal for acoustic blues or other styles that benefit from a more controlled bass response. Of all the Collings body shapes, this is the one most often requested with a sunburst top finish, as this guitar beautifully demonstrates.
A custom Adirondack Spruce drives the top on this monster. On an open strum, the words clarity and richness come right to mind. The trebles are clean and defined without overpowering the overall richness of the bottom-end. Adirondack Spruce on the top with Pre-war scalloped bracing makes this guitar incredibly powerful with virtually unlimited headroom and plenty of Adirondack crispness. The slope shoulder design allows this guitar to be played fingerstyle as well without sacrificing any flatpicking demands you could throw at this instrument. Volume will not be a problem with this guitar in a jam session... it will dominate other string band instruments!
The back and sides are Mahogany, which produces clear, distinct notes and is very well appreciated in the recording studio, as it is known to be a bit more balanced in front of a microphone than rosewood. There is a definite reason, the Slope shoulder design is referred to as the "Workhorse"!
Custom appointments on this Collings CJ Mh are a beautiful Tiger Stripe pickguard, short scale option (24 - 7/8", more traditionally inline with a pre-war Slope Dread), Tortoise Bindings, SJ fingerboard inlays, cutthrought saddle, walnut Stain, Satin Finish and a gorgeous Sunburst Top.
