Collings CJ Mh SS Bearclaw Sitka with Adirondack Bracing ID-6058
Collings CJ Mh SS Bearclaw Sitka with Adirondack Bracing
The Collings Jumbo, or CJ, is Collings' version of the classic slope-shouldered dreadnought, a shape that has enjoyed renewed popularity in recent years. While the Collings CJ is similar in width and depth to the traditional dreadnought, it has a distinctly different tone. Despite its large size this model works well with the optional shorter string scale, resulting in a somewhat percussive bottom end ideal for acoustic blues or other styles that benefit from a more controlled bass response.
The top of this CJ Mh is Master Grade Bearclaw Sitka Spruce, although it plays like vintage Adirondack that has opened up from years of heavy playing. There isn't a hint of breaking up when played hard, heavy and loud. Sitka is very versatile and known for it's lush bass response and easy playability. The back and sides are mahogany, which produces clear and distinct notes and is very well appreciated in the recording studio, as it is known to be a bit more balanced in front of a microphone. The use of Adirondack Spruce for the bracing makes the bracing lighter and more responsive, offering a more efficient transfer of energy throughout the top, and adding significantly to the tone of this instrument.
Some of the fine vintage appointments on this custom CJ Mh include Ivoroid Binding on the body, 1 3/4" Nut Width, 24 7/8" Short Scale Length, Madagascar Fretboard, Madagascar Bridge, Madagascar Headstock Overlay topped off with Nickel Waverly tuners with Ivoroid buttons. The Madagascar Fretboard and bridge are more to the specifications of a pre-war Slope shoulder Dread. The use of the Madagascar in both areas makes for a richer series of overtones than if you were to use Ebony. This not only contributes to the vintage sound, it also looks stunning with light figuring throughout.
Of all of the Collings body styles, the CJ is the most requested with a sunburst and it sets off the body just perfectly. Combined with the Madagascar Rosewood fretboard and bridge as well as the custom Tigerstripe pickguard, the look of this guitar is no less than stunning.
