Collings CJH All Mh Mahogany and Mahogany No Tongue Brace
This Collings CJ Mh Mahogany and Mahogany is simply appointed in a tortoise bound body, an ebony fretboard and headstock overlay, Nickel Waverly tuners with Ebony buttons and a custom 1 3/4"" nut width.
The Collings Jumbo, or CJ, is Collings' version of the classic slope-shouldered dreadnought, a shape that has enjoyed renewed popularity in recent years. While the CJ is similar in width and depth to the traditional dreadnought, it has a distinctly different tone.
Despite its large size this model works well with the optional shorter string scale, resulting in a somewhat percussive bottom end ideal for acoustic blues or other styles that benefit from a more controlled bass response. Of all the Collings body shapes, this is the one most often requested with a sunburst top finish, as this guitar beautifully demonstrates.
This gorgeous Collings CJH All Mh features a Mahogany top, combined with Mahogany back and sides. This is an absolutely wonderful sounding instrument. The Mahogany top provides for more sustain, slower attack, as you would expect from a heavier top. Mahogany tops make for a friendly, sweet guitar that does not amplify mistakes.
The Mahogany back and sides are perfect for players who find rosewood too boomy. Lead players will appreciate the enhanced note definition and clarity, especially through the midrange frequencies.
This guitar excels at fingerstyle playing while also providing great projection and depth when strummed and flatpicked. The all-mahogany construction provides a clear, woody, dry and airy tone that is very balanced and smooth thanks to the masterful voicing.
The custom herringbone purfle is a classy visual feature and we find it also adds to the tone and responsiveness of the instrument. By cutting into the outer edge of the soundboard and replacing with herringbone, you are making changes in how the top is isolated from the side of the guitar, how freely it moves and in what direction. In our experience the addition of the herringbone makes the guitar feel a bit more "opened up" right from the start.
The tongue brace has also been left off of this guitar allowing for the Adirondack Spruce top to resonate a bit more freely.
