Collings 003KG

This Custom Collings 003KG features a custom German Spruce top, Koa back and sides, a solid Mahogany neck, and Ebony fingerboard and bridge, Style 41 Abalone Top Purfle, and Custom Adirondack Bracing. It boasts the projection and tonal clarity Collings is known for, while still maintaining a good measure of warmth on the bottom end. The German Spruce top is highly responsive and can handle flatpicking quite well with a clear, focused, and round tone, although the guitar practically begs to be played fingerstyle with notes that seem to leap from the small sound cavity of this baby all the way up the neck.

The German Spruce top is complimented by Koa back and sides. Koa, like Mahogany, has a relatively high velocity of sound when considered as materials for backs and sides and thus contribute much to overtone coloration. Where rosewood guitars can be thought of as having a reverby, sometimes "metallic" sound, mahogany and koa guitars are better described as sounding "woody." Between the two, koa seems to have a little more fullness in the midrange, while mahogany tends to favor the bass (to some extent) and the treble.
