Collings 01 A 12 Fret Adirondack Spruce with Mahogany and No Tongue Brace
While Collings has been revered for their contemporary take on Dreadnoughts and OM's, they, like many other builders have been increasingly interested in smaller bodied guitars, not only for their comfort and playability, but also for their complex tonal spectrum. Collings was intrigued by a early Martin 14 fret single 0, and decided to build their own modern masterpiece.
With the exception of the Baby, the 0 is Collings smallest guitar and is offered with the same shorter scale found on the 12-fret 00. Although measuring only 13.5 inches in width (smaller than a typical classical guitar), the Collings 0 has tone and volume that belies its first impression as being less than full-sized. It can double as a travel guitar or a small OM, performing both roles equally well. The same neck and woods options offered with larger Collings models are available on the 0 as well, giving players an almost infinite range of tonal possibilities.
This Collings 01 features a Adirondack Spruce top and Mahogany back and sides. Adirondack was the legendary topwood used on most pre-war American-made guitars that has come to be known as the "Holy Grail" of top woods. Adirondack has a high stiffness across and along the grain, making it one of the go-to topwoods for flatpickers.
The gorgeous Mahogany back and sides provide a flat EQ response, dry, crisp note character, and certainly definition of note. When played chordally, Mahogany will allow you to hear each and every note in a complex chord, plus single note runs will be crystal clear.
We are also a big fan of leaving the tongue brace out of these instruments. As people search for the mythical tone of old guitars, this brace comes into scrutiny. Martin added the tongue brace in 1940 and it has become standard every since.
The absence of a tongue brace frees the top to allow enhanced vibration and results in a richer, fuller, tone with more low end resonance. It is speculated that Martin added the brace to prevent top cracking, but the years have proven this to have been unnecessary and actually decreases resonation.
This 01 is appointed with a Ivoroid bound body, ebony fretboard, and bridge, and finished off with Nickel Waverly Tuners. Custom appointments include a 1 3/4" nut width, Style 2 Rosette, Ivoroid Binding and a Custom Sheraton Brown Stain.
