Collings Custom 01 Guitar Jet Black Sitka Spruce Top with Doghair Mahogany Back and Sides
While Collings has been revered for their contemporary take on Dreadnoughts and OM's, they, like many other builders have been increasingly interested in smaller bodied guitars, not only for their comfort and playability, but also for their complex tonal spectrum. Collings was intrigued by a early Martin 14 fret single 0, and decided to build their own modern masterpiece.
The 0 style guitar was originally designed by Martin in the 1850's to have a 12 fret neck joint. The fourteen 14 fret single 0 was redesigned in the early 1930's to have a 14 fret neck joint. The Collings 0 is only 13.5 inches in width, which is smaller than a classical guitar and from Collings' website: "the 0 has a tone and volume that belies its first impression as being less than full-sized. It can double as a travel guitar or a small OM, performing both roles equally well." We couldn't agree more.
The sitka top is great for players who desire a balanced tone, coupled with the quicker string response that Sitka spruce can offer. The soundboard (sitka) on this guitar produces a nice round low end that is powerful and very rich in tone. Coupled with Indian Rosewood, every note is well rounded, punchy and warm.
Rhythm players will appreciate that the Sitka top allows a heavier hand than some European tonewoods, yet has characteristics of Adirondack. Fingerpickers should not be left out, as the 24 7/8" inch short scale length makes Mississippi John Hurt songs sound brand new, however, modern chordal players will hear complex chords cleanly and clearly.
Sitka spruce offers both a quicker string attack, quicker decay, as well as slightly less lingering overtones - which can be a bit pesky depending upon your playing needs.
This custom Collings O1 begins with a glossy jet black top set off by ivoroid Body binding, 2-style rosette and a custom pearloid pickguard. Just looking at the top of this guitar, you know you are looking at something special!
When the guitar is turned over, you are greeted with a stunning black finish with a white grain filler... a finish we are used to seeing on Collings' electrics as of late! This doghair finish is unique to Collings and we are very pleased to have an acoustic with such a desirable look.
