Collings Custom 290 Prototype Tobacco Sunburst with Single Lollar P-90 ID-5456
Collings Custom 290 Prototype Tobacco Sunburst with Single Lollar P-90
A tribute to the early pre-'61 Melody Makers, we have commisioned this Collings custom 290 Prototype from Collings with a single hand-wired P-90 from Jason Lollar and 2 controls, 1 volume and 1 tone, for the ultimate in simplicity. The pickguard was custom designed to match this configuration and looks no less than stunning against the deep Tobacco Sunburst and the rich grained mahogany.
The Body is crafted from select piece of dense mahogany that has two well thought out ergonomic cuts on the back of the guitar, one for the area where the guitar rests & conforms to your ribcage (in the waist of the body), and the other in the lower bout to accommodate resting on your knee when sitting down. The leg cutout makes practicing or doing a session easy as it conforms to your leg, and the other, makes standing and playing a gig a pleasure as the guitar fits comfortably against your body.
The Neck joint has been uniquely designed to join the body at an angle, allowing easier access to the upper frets. The neck joins at the 17th fret on the bass side, & at the 19th fret on the treble side. The neck is also crafted from select Mahogany that was typically used on the what today is considered investment grade instruments of the 50’s and 60’s. This dense mahogany offers more mass, more rigidity & continuity from neck through the body. It responds better than any guitar you have may have ever played, and is extremely well balanced in your hands.
We are truly amazed by what this single pickup guitar has to offer! It is capable of producing a vast array of tones, from pristine clean tones rich with harmonic complexity to hard-hitting vintage rock tones with enough focused growl to cut through any mix. Dial back the volume and tone, and you'll be surprised by the smooth, mellow tones that are available without ever getting muddy. The lollar pickup has a fat P-90 tone with a smooth treble response, having more of a vintage sound, rather than a new pickup that sounds hard or harsh. Overall tone is brighter with less of a grind to the distortion quality and is slower to overdrive an amp than a standard P-90 set. This instrument will put tone back in the hands of the player, not in the hands of effect pedals or multi-channel amps.
