Collings D1G German Spruce with Mahogany Back and Sides
If there is anything the folks at Collings know, and they know quite a lot - it is dreadnoughts. While Collings is certainly not the first to build them, they bring a new tonal clarity to the depth and warmth usually associated with such a large, deep-bodied guitar. The bass response makes the dreadnought ideal for vocal accompaniment, however, Collings D1 Series Mahogany dreads are employed by some of the busiest bluegrass flatpickers in the business, such as Andy Falco of the Stringdusters and Adam Aijala of Yonder Mountain String Band.
This particular Collings D1 features a custom German Spruce top. German Spruce with it's high headroom, and complex lush bass, mixed with a clear, bell-like high end is the perfect compliment to the Mahogany Back and Sides. Chord accompaniment is full and crisp, and single note lines jump out at you. Rhythm players will appreciate that the German top allows a heavier hand than Sitka, yet sounds a bit more like old Adirondack. German spruce offers both a quicker string attack, quicker decay, as well as slightly less lingering overtones - which can be a bit pesky depending upon your playing needs.
Another custom feature on this Collings D1 is a 1 23/32" nut width for those who prefer a bit wider neck, but dont want to go as far as 1 3/4".
