Collings D2HA Adirondack Spruce and Cocobolo
The Collings D2HA is a standard model in our shop. It has commanding presence with balanced tone and clarity. This instrument has been custom ordered with an Adirondack top pared with Cocobolo back and sides. The Adirondack Red Spruce brings the guitar strong fundamentals, a lightning quick response, and crisp trebles.
Adirondack was the legendary topwood used on most pre-war American-made guitars. Adirondack has a high stiffness across and along the grain, making it one of the go-to topwoods for flatpickers. The D2HA is a guitar you take to battle, the guitar you fight for.
Cocobolo characteristically has poweful low overtones resulting in a complex bottom end. The overall effect is also a bell like tone with clear, slow decaying harmonics. Fast and responsive, it articulate with ample note distinction and a rich low end. This particular set of Cocobolo has very deep red streaks alternating with lighter red streaks, the robust Red colors are complimented by beautiful contrasting black streaks.
While Collings is certainly not the first to build 14-fret dreadnoughts, they bring a new tonal clarity to the depth and warmth usually associated with such a large, deep-bodied guitar.
The herringbone purfle is a classy visual feature and we find it also adds to the tone and responsiveness of the instrument. By cutting into the outer edge of the soundboard and replacing with herringbone, you are making changes in how the top is isolated from the side of the guitar, how freely it moves and in what direction. In our experience the addition of the herringbone makes the guitar feel a bit more "opened up" right from the start.
Other custom appointments include a 3 Style Backstrip, Abalone Rosette, Ivoroid bound Peghead, and Nickel Waverly Tuners.
This instrument is in Excellent + Condition with no wear to mention.
