Collings OM 42ACVnVarn Adirondack and Indian Rosewood, Varnish Finish, Adi Bracing, Vintage Now Neck and Bridge with 42 Style Inlays and Cutaway
'OM' stands for "Orchestra Model," but 80 years after this body shape was first designed it has become the most popular 14-fret model with fingerstyle guitar soloists who choose to play on steel strings... yet with an Adirondack Spruce top, flatpickers also find it very appealing with virtually unlimited headroom and power when you need it.
The compact shape makes the Collings OM equally easy to handle onstage or when sitting on the couch, and the hand rubbed varnish finish on this custom model results in balanced tone and an immediate response with a much larger bottom end than is generally found on OM sized guitars. Varnish finishes are very time consuming, but the tonal benefit makes it well worth the wait. The overall tone is smoother and not as "jangly" as a new nitro finish. This makes the guitar sound more vintage right from the start.
The top of this guitar is Adirondack Spruce, the stiffest of the topwoods. This makes the guitar have lots of power with virtually unlimited headroom and a lightning fast attack with unmatched clarity and definition. To take this principle one step further, the top bracing is also Adirondack Spruce, making the top even stiffer.
The neck profile on this guitar is the "Vintage Now" option. This is their medium neck profile, which is very comfortable, adding a little bit of mass to the overall neck shape. We also find the greater mass of the neck contributes to a richer, fuller sound. The nut width is a comfortable 1 3/4" on a Vintage Now neck.
The back and sides of this guitar feature an exquisite set of Indian Rosewood. Rosewood back and sides make a guitar that is very rich with a full low end. Rosewood also imparts a natural reverb type effect, with lots of overtones and note decay.
Visual appointments on this guitar include a flowerpot inlay on the headstock and 42 style abalone top purfling, with 42 style snowflakes on the fingerboard.
The tone of this special guitar sounds much more like a dreadnought than an OM. Everyone in the shop is floored by the massive tone and projection of this instrument... it's that good!
