Collings OM1 A VN VAR Custom Adirondack Spruce and Mahogany with Adirondack Braces and Varnish Finish
The Collings OM1 A is a classic Collings model, a shop favorite, and while it takes it's inspiration from the original models, Collings has subtly upgraded these with their signature style, and tone. OM stands for Orchestra Model, but 80 years after this body shape was first designed it has become the most popular 14-fret model with fingerstyle guitar soloists who choose to play on steel strings. Collings has transformed the standard OM, into a true "do it all" instrument.
This OM1 A packs a serious punch, with killer volume and presence - easily acting as a dreadnought alternative. This OM1 A has a superb balance and clarity, each note stands out in chordal accompaniment, as well as lead lines. The Adirondack top adds a tremendous amount of headroom, crisp trebles, and gut-punching mids. It takes to a flatpick beautifully, but sings with bare fingers as well. You know the feeling when you're holding that guitar? - this is that guitar.
Accompaniments like the Adirondack bracing make this guitar that much more menacing. Adirondack Bracing offers a more efficient transfer of string energy to the top, since Adirondack is much stiffer than the standard Sitka braces. This allows for a more responsive and powerful sound board.
The custom 1 3/4" nut width which allows our fingerpicking friends to play effortlessly and bend chords easily.
As people search for the mythical tone of old guitars, the tongue brace comes into scrutiny. Martin added the tongue brace in 1940 and it has become standard every since. The absence of a tongue brace frees the top to allow enhanced vibration and results in a richer, fuller, tone with more low end resonance. It is speculated that Martin added the brace to prevent top cracking, but the years have proven this to have been unnecessary and actually decreases resonation.
Thinner than nitrocellulose lacquer, the custom varnish finish is more flexible and allows the wood to resonate more, significantly smoothing out the mids and highs while extending the low end considerably. The tonal qualities produced by the varnish finish are amazing, especially when compared side by side to a guitar without it.
Finished off with gorgeous tortoise body binding, Black /White wood nitrate strip rosette, Black / White wood purfling and 1-style walnut backstrip, this guitar not only sounds fantastic, it provides a classic style and elegance unlike any other.
