Collings OM1AC Cutaway Adirondack Spruce and Mahogany with Cutaway
OM stands for Orchestra Model, but 80 years after this body shape was first designed it has become the most popular 14-fret model with fingerstyle guitar soloists who choose to play on steel strings. Yet flatpickers also find it appealing, and when the graceful cutaway is added the OM1 is often used by lead players who routinely explore all 20 frets.
The compact shape makes the Collings OM1AC equally easy to handle onstage or when sitting on the couch, and the relatively shallow body (barely over 4 inches deep) results in balanced tone and an immediate response.
This particular Collings OM1AC features a custom Adirondack Red Spruce top, bringing punch and clarity; mahogany sides and back, bringing brightness and note definition; a short scale length of 24 7/8" and a custom cutaway for easier access to the lower frets.
Accompaniments like the Adirondack bracing offers a more efficient transfer of string energy to the top, since Adirondack is much stiffer than the standard Sitka braces. This allows for a more responsive and powerful sound board. Additionally, the Adirondack Braces are attached with hot hide glue. Hot Hide glue sets up like glass, offering a more immediate and efficient transfer of energy throughout the top, making the overall guitar more responsive with a clarity of tone that is unmatched.
This guitar was also built with the absence of a tongue brace. The absence of a tongue brace frees the top to allow enhanced vibration and results in a richer, fuller, tone with more low end resonance. It is speculated that Martin added the brace to prevent top cracking, but the years have proven this to have been unnecessary and actually decreases resonation.
