Collings OM1AC Cutaway Adirondack Spruce and Mahogany with No Tongue Brace

OM stands for Orchestra Model, but 80 years after this body shape was first designed it has become the most popular 14-fret model with fingerstyle guitar soloists who choose to play on steel strings. Yet flatpickers also find it appealing, and when the graceful cutaway is added the OM1 is often used by lead players who routinely explore all 20 frets. The compact shape makes the Collings OM1AC equally easy to handle onstage or when sitting on the couch, and the relatively shallow body (barely over 4 inches deep) results in balanced tone and an immediate response.

This particular Collings OM1AC features a custom Adirondack Red Spruce top, bringing punch and clarity; mahogany sides and back, bringing brightness and note definition; a custom 1 3/4 nut width and a custom cutaway for easier access to the lower frets.

The Mahogany back and sides on this guitar lends somewhat of a warm and soft tone, which, is well balanced with good grind and bite. This combined with an Adirondack Spruce top makes for a tryluy superb guitar in tone as well as aesthetics. Adirondack Spruce is a bit less stiff than Sitka Spruce and offers a quicker response as well as more snap to the note. The custom cutaway makes for easy access and playability up and down the neck.

This guitar was also built with the absence of a tongue brace. The absence of a tongue brace frees the top to allow enhanced vibration and results in a richer, fuller, tone with more low end resonance. It is speculated that Martin added the brace to prevent top cracking, but the years have proven this to have been unnecessary and actually decreases resonation.
