Collings OM1H Mh Mahogany with Herringbone
The OM guitar is an interpretation of the Martin short run of instruments made between 1929 and 1933. These feature a 000 size body with a 14 fret neck. 'OM' stands for "Orchestra Model," but 80 years after this body shape was first designed it has become the most popular 14-fret model with fingerstyle guitar soloists who choose to play on steel strings. Yet flatpickers also find it appealing, and when the graceful cutaway is added these OMs are often used by lead players who routinely explore all 20 frets much as they would on an electric guitar.
The compact shape makes the Collings OM equally easy to handle onstage or when sitting on the couch, and the relatively shallow body (barely over 4 inches deep) results in balanced tone and an immediate response.
This OM1 features a custom Mahogany top combined with Mahogany back and sides. The Mahogany top provides for more sustain, slower attack, as you would expect from a heavier top. Mahogany tops make for a friendly, sweet guitar that does not amplify mistakes. The Mahogany back and sides are perfect for players who find rosewood too boomy. Lead players will appreciate the enhanced note definition and clarity, especially through the midrange frequencies.
This custom Mahogany OM1 is absolutely gorgeous. It is appointed with a custom Herringbone top purfling, Nickel Waverly tuners with Ebony buttons and high gloss nitrocellulose lacquer finish and a custom 1 23/32" nut width which allows our fingerpicking friends to play effortlessly and bend chords easily.
The herringbone purfle is a classy visual feature and we find it also adds to the tone and responsiveness of the instrument. By cutting into the outer edge of the soundboard and replacing with herringbone, you are making changes in how the top is isolated from the side of the guitar, how freely it moves and in what direction. In our experience the addition of the herringbone makes the guitar feel a bit more "opened up" right from the start.
