Collings OM2 E Cutaway Englemann and Indian Rosewood with Adirondack Braces ID-7362
Collings OM2E Cutaway Englemann and Indian Rosewood with Adirondack Braces
‘OM’ stands for “Orchestra Model,” but 80 years after this body shape was first designed it has become the most popular 14-fret model with fingerstyle guitar soloists who choose to play on steel strings. Flatpickers find it very appealing with virtually unlimited headroom and power when you need it. The compact shape makes the Collings OM2HE equally easy to handle onstage or when sitting on the couch. The tone is focused and powerful, as are all Collings' guitars.
The topwood on this guitar is Englemann Spruce. Englemann Spruce is a perfect topwood for many playing styles, in that it is stiff enough to flatpick while soft enough for fingerstyle players as well.
When combined with rosewood on the back and sides, Englemann is very lush and has a warm, rich low end. The highs are also crystal clear on a Collings, since only the highest grade Englemann Spruce is chosen for their instruments. This guitar also features a cutaway, ensuring easy access to the upper frets. You really can't go wrong with this model!
How do you make this OM2H E Cut even better? Add custom options such as Adirondack braces and removing the tongue brace. This is a powerful combination equating to a dramatic increase in power and pure tone. Adirondack Braces are lighter and stiffer than Sitka, therefore they are more responsive and offer a more efficient transfer of energy through the top.
We are a big fan of leaving the tongue brace out of these instruments. As people search for the mythical tone of old guitars, this brace comes into scrutiny. Martin added the tongue brace in 1940 and it has become standard every since. The absence of a tongue brace frees the top to allow enhanced vibration and results in a richer, fuller, tone with more low end resonance. It is speculated that Martin added the brace to prevent top cracking, but the years have proven this to have been unnecessary and actually decreases resonance.
