Dr. Z Carmen Ghia 2x10 Combo Blonde with Tan Grille Cloth ID-10764
The Dr. Z Carmen Ghia is truly a "no frills" pure and honest tone machine. With a single input, volume, and one tone knob, this amp is made to become one with what ever guitar you plug into it. There is a tangible directness to the Carmen Ghia, it's a study of sonic minimalism in the best sense.
Using a Collings I35-LC with medium/low output Throbaks', the Carmen Ghia spoke with a lovely and natural compression quite early in the throw of the volume knob. At 10 O'clock on the volume control the amp held onto the notes with a pushed and transcient rich tone which seemed to blurr the line between clean and overdriven. The further we pushed the volume past noon, the more the amp and guitar wanted to sing. Lightening the right hand revealed a rich clean tone even at higher gain levels.
When we plugged a strat into the Ghia, we were suprised to find a musical semi-broken clean tone well into 12 O'clock on the volume control. Dr Mike's description of clean tones that simply get bigger and bigger was spot on with single coil equipped guitars.
Our favorite guitar we plugged into the Ghia was a Lollar P90 equipped Collings 290. This combination of amp and guitar filled the room with a full clean/crunch tone, rich in "alnico-like" swirling transcients. It called to mind the best Roots Rock/Americana type tone that even Ryan Adams would have been proud of. No matter where we set the amp's volume, a light right hand made drastic changes in overdrive content, and for a true crisp clean tone, all we needed to do was roll the guitar's volume back a hair.
This amp is for you if you want the combination of amp and guitar to be the greatest determining factor in varying your tone. You will hear your Strat "quack," your Tele "twang," your Les Paul "bark," and the air move in your ES 335. The amp is a stage friendly 18 watts and would be excellent for ambient or worship musicians with its early onset clean/crunch voice.
If you want more control over specific frequencies and need one guitar to cop the voice of another different type of guitar, we recommend checking out the MAZ 18.
From the Dr. Z website:
At first glance, the Carmen Ghia looks rather, well, modest. This is why the Ghia leaves so many people floored from the first note. Clean notes come out with a warmth, complexity, and sustain like one has never heard from such a small amp. Every note has a hugeness to it that seems far beyond an 18 watt head. All this comes before the amp really starts to sing. As you turn the Volume clockwise, the fun factor increases. The big clean notes get even BIGGER than they were before. Sustain becomes as smooth and musical as you have ever heard it. Notes seem to sing forever. This is an incredibly fun amp, and you’ll have trouble putting your guitar down. The Carmen Ghia interacts with the player because the player can feel the power tube distortion.
This amp has become a favorite in recording studios around the world. It’s also a great little amp for small clubs. While many other small amps have trouble cutting through the mix and have a rather flatulent low end, your Dr. Z Carmen Ghia will always cut through the mix tightly and musically.
