Dr. Z Cure 1x12 Combo

Our Take:

Dr Z's newest 6v6 masterpiece is The Cure for the common misbelief that you need to spend a lot of money to experience great vintage inspired tone. Anyone familiar with vintage fender amps from the mid 60's will be thrilled with the sound of this amp. Strats and Teles sound right at home with the Cure, and the good doctor has voiced the treble control to have a lot of throw before you start getting "ice-pick like" highs.

That wonderful high transient "sizzle" we all love in vintage black face fender amps is authentically there and ready to howl if you hit the Cure with a mid boosting overdrive. But you don't necessarily need a pedal board to get this amp to sing. Turn the Volume knob to that fender "magic 6" position on the dial, roll back the master to goose the preamp section a bit, set the global level control to flat out and you might be convinced you are listening to a pushed Super Reverb.

When we tried the EQ lift feature with our shop favorite Collings I35 LC, it instantly reminded us of that focused and high-fi, singing overdrive ala Robben Ford or Larry Carlton. The amp spoke with that great "chirpy" attack to the front of the notes and had us all trying to remember the riff from "Talk to your Daughter."

Our normal experience with master volumes and level controls, on amps of this style, is usually less than impressive. Its common for this type of circuit to sound "grainy" or "buzzy" and to lose most of that singing clean quality. The Cure however, retained a great musical clean tone even with the level control rolled back quite a bit. And when we rolled the master back a hair, and put the mid control just past noon, the amp took on a very "tweed-like" voice.

We feel you will love this amp if you love vintage American clean and overdrive tones.

You may not be able to "Stand the Weather" if you absolutely must have on board reverb. For that we recommend that you check out the Z-Lux.

From the Dr. Z website:

The CURE is an amp that takes Dr. Z Amps back to its roots. Built on our 30 year foundation of delivering excellent, professional-grade amplifiers, it is designed using the highest grade components, totally hand-built, and available at a very reasonable price.

The CURE uses the our award-winning Z-LUX as it’s starting point; you could consider it the "Z-Lux Jr." It simplifies the Z-LUX formula, forgoing reverb and tremolo, yet retains the rich, tube-rectified, 6V6 "American" voiced tone the Z-LUX is renowned for. At the heart and soul of the CURE is a vintage-voiced output transformer hand-wound by Triad Magnetics, the company responsible for the transformers in the classic "tweed" amps of the 1950s.

The CURE also features an effects loop, a full EQ with master volume, as well as a global output level control. It is housed in our compact, light-weight, yet resonant 1×12 "Studio" cab with our specially designed Eminence Z12 speaker(as featured in the Z-LUX combo) for maximum portability. Set your volume and master for desired clean or distortion then set the overall loudness with the Level control. I have also included our Variable Boost footswitch for additional gain to take your lead playing over the top.

A great "grab-n-go" package that will please even the most discerning tone aficionado, the CURE is as easy on the wallet as it is on your ears.
