Pre Owned 2014 Collings 01G Custom Jet Black German Spruce Top
While Collings has been revered for their contemporary take on Dreadnoughts and OM's, they, like many other builders have been increasingly interested in smaller bodied guitars, not only for their comfort and playability, but also for their complex tonal spectrum. Collings was intrigued by a early Martin 14 fret single 0, and decided to build their own modern masterpiece. This Pre Owned 2014 Collings 01G Custom Jet Black German Spruce Top with
Doghair Mahogany is in excellent + with no wear to mention. It has minor fretwear and includes the original hardshell case.
The 0 style guitar was originally designed by Martin in the 1850's to have a 12 fret neck joint. The fourteen 14 fret single 0 was redesigned in the early 1930's to have a 14 fret neck joint. The Collings 0 is only 13.5 inches in width, which is smaller than a classical guitar and from Collings' website: "the 0 has a tone and volume that belies its first impression as being less than full-sized. It can double as a travel guitar or a small OM, performing both roles equally well." We couldn't agree more.
As the reviewer from Acoustic Guitar magazine aptly nicknamed the Sitka brother to this instrument, "The Mahogany Monster", this particular guitar, with it's upgraded German Spruce top, should be the "The Titan of Tone!" German Spruce with it's high headroom, and complex lush bass, mixed with a clear, bell-like high end is the perfect compliment to the Mahogany Back and Sides. Chord accompaniment is full and crisp, and single note lines jump out at you.
Rhythm players will appreciate that the German top allows a heavier hand than Sitka, yet sounds a bit more like old Adirondack. Fingerpickers should not be left out, as the 24 7/8" inch short scale length makes Mississippi John Hurt songs sound brand new, however, modern chordal players will hear complex chords cleanly and clearly. German spruce offers both a quicker string attack, quicker decay, as well as slightly less lingering overtones - which can be a bit pesky depending upon your playing needs.
This custom Collings O1G begins with a glossy jet black top set off by ivoroid bindings, custom rosette and a custom pearloid pickguard. Just looking at the top of this guitar, you know you are looking at something special! When the guitar is turned over, you are greeted with a stunning black finish with a white grain filler... a finish we are used to seeing on Collings' electrics as of late! This doghair finish is unique to Collings and we are very pleased to have an acoustic with such a desirable look.
