Pre Owned Collings CJ Mh All Mahogany with Doghair Finish

The Collings Jumbo, or CJ, is Collings version of the classic slope-shouldered dreadnought, a shape that has enjoyed renewed popularity in recent years. While the CJ is similar in width and depth to the traditional dreadnought, it has a distinctly different tone. Despite its large size this model works well with the optional shorter string scale, resulting in a somewhat percussive bottom end ideal for acoustic blues or other styles that benefit from a more controlled bass response. Of all the Collings body shapes, this is the one most often requested with a sunburst top finish, and the wide range of wood options, neck widths, and string scales allow the CJ to be many different guitars to a wide variety of players.

This custom CJ Mh features a Mahogany top with Mahogany back and sides. Custom appointments include the gorgeous Doghair finish, ivoroid bindings, rope purfling, ivoroid pickguard, nickel waverly tuners and ivoroid long dots and logo. Additionally, the tongue brace has been removed from this instrument. We are a big fan of leaving the tongue brace out of these instruments. As people search for the mythical tone of old guitars, this brace comes into scrutiny. Martin added the tongue brace in 1940 and it has become standard every since. The absence of a tongue brace frees the top to allow enhanced vibration and results in a richer, fuller, tone with more low end resonance. It is speculated that Martin added the brace to prevent top cracking, but the years have proven this to have been unnecessary and actually decreases resonation. Finally, this Collings CJ Mh has a 1 3/4" nut width which gives you plenty of room for complex chord shapes.

The Mahogany top provides for more sustain, slower attack, as you would expect from a heavier top. Mahogany tops make for a friendly, sweet guitar that does not amplify mistakes. The Mahogany back and sides are perfect for players who find rosewood too boomy. Lead players will appreciate the enhanced note definition and clarity, especially through the midrange frequencies. The Mahogany chosen for this particular guitar has an extremely intense grain pattern, more dense than usual. So it is an excellent choice for the custom Doghair finish. On close examination we decided to call it a 'Stone Washed' Doghair - kind of like their Faded Cherry, it shows off the grain pattern that Mother Nature created in this very special set of Mahogany!

How did Collings produce this gorgeous doghair finish? Initially the guitar is sprayed black, and then white grain filler is applied. Timing is critical as the filler dries very quickly and excess must be removed while it is still wet. Sanding is out of the question as this would remove the black coat. It is lacquered using polyurethane for the base coat and then nitrocellulose for the latter layers. To accentuate this beautiful finish we have chosen to use Mahogany on the top as opposed to the standard Sitka Spruce. The result is another one of a kind masterpiece from Colling's guitars.

This Pre Owned Collings CJ MH is in absolutely excellent condition with only a few minor pickguard scratches and one almost un-noticeable dent on the top as shown in the detailed photos below. It has very minor fretwear adn includes the original hardshell case.
