Pre-Owned Collings SJ Cutaway Sitka Spruce and Indian Rosewood
Collings craftsmanship is respected by professional and amateur musicians alike…anyone on the quest for quality. Some of these include artists: Keith Richards, Lyle Lovett, Pete Townshend, Emmylou Harris, Andy Summers, David Crosby, Chris Hillman, Joni Mitchell, Don Felder, John Sebastian, Lou Reed, John Fogerty, Tim O'Brien, Pete Huttlinger, Kenny Smith, Brian May, Joan Baez, John Prine, Nigel Tufnel of Spinal Tap, and Steven Spielberg to name a few. You owe it to yourself to try a Collings guitar. The SJ is Collings' version of what is commonly called a small Jumbo. Although the 16 inch lower bout is slightly wider than a dreadnought, and the sides almost as deep, the tight curve at the waist creates in a very different sound chamber. SJs typically have a more pronounced midrange response when compared to a dreadnought, which translates into more note definition. Players looking for the bass and overall volume of a large guitar, but with lots of treble clarity and midrange crunch, often find just what they need in the curvaceous Collings SJ.
This guitar features a Sitka Spruce top over Indian Rosewood back and sides, the tone is immediately responsive to fingerstyle and light strumming while being able to withstand moderate flatpicking and strumming with ease.
Sitka has a lower stiffness-to-weight ratio than Adirondack Red Spruce. A positive side-effect of this more flexible soundboard is that it doesn't require as much strength (or string attack) to produce it's signature balanced sonic tone. A player with a lighter attack or even fingerstyle players will find Sitka Spruce much more suited to their playing style.
The Indian Rosewood back and sides provides a deep, extended low end when compared to mahogany and certainly shines when combined with Colling's masterfully tuned Select Sitka top. This particular set of Indian Rosewood is not only beautiful, it provides a perfect tone and volume for all styles of play. The low end is clear, distinct and incredibly powerful, without sacrificing the strong high end.
The body, fretboard and headstock are bound in grained ivoroid with a Style 3 backstrip on the back. The Brazilian Rosewood headstock overlay looks especially nice on this SJ, with rich dark grain variations set off by the Ivoroid binding.
Like most all Collings, this guitar has more than ample volume and presence. This SJ is a natural strummer, with clear chords that sound remarkably balanced with all the power you could ever hope for. Fingerstyle lines are also quite nice, offering a surprising amount of headroom from an Sitka topped guitar. The cutaway allows access to the highest frets with ease, while also adding to the appearance of the guitar.
This Collings SJ Cutaway is in excellent condition with only slight buff marks and surface scratches which are not photo graphical and barely visible to the naked eye. Additionally, it has no fretwear and includes the original hardshell case.
