Santa Cruz D PW Sitka Spruce and Indian Rosewood

“Richard Hoover’s passion for the acoustic guitar gave rise to a burning desire to discover how they were made and equally important, how they worked.  In 1968, there was absolutely no information on the construction of the acoustic steel string guitars.  In pre-Internet days, the other independent pioneers of guitar building may just as well have been on other planets.

Copying the assemblies of the important brands was straightforward, compared to truly controlling the guitar’s voice. Hoover turned to the printed body of knowledge on centuries of violin refinement as the sole source of the true way.  Herein lay the key for taking his favored instrument out of the realm of the factories and into the enlightened practice of traditional lutherie.”

Today, Richard Hoover and Santa Cruz Company celebrate 40 years of building some of the industry’s most treasured and sought after instruments. Staying true to their history, Santa Cruz guitars are still crafted one instrument at a time in sunny California. With their focus on quality and tonal excellence, they have won over the hearts of players the world over. With players like Eric Clapton, Eric Skye, Tony Rice, Doc Watson, and Brad Paisley touting their craftsmanship, it is clear that Richard has accomplished what he set out to do in 1968; build the most sophisticated guitars available.

The Santa Cruz PW series guitars are consistently some of our favorite instruments, and for good reason.

The pre-war forward shifted bracing pattern favors bass response making these guitars very powerful with a big bluegrass "thump!" Even with this forward shifted bracing, the Santa Cruz team does not allow these guitars to lose their signature string balance; as these guitars are equally responsive up and down the register. The advanced X-Bracing also makes the guitar very responsive for fingerstyle playing flatpicking, alike.

This guitar is custom appointed with an Ivoroid body binding, herringbone top purfle and a zipper back strip.
