Collings Ukulele UT2 Tenor Mahogany

Hear This Instrument: Collings Ukulele UT2 Tenor Mahogany
Recorded In-House on a Sony PCM-D50 handheld recorder with no compression or eq.
Collings Ukulele UT2 Tenor Mahogany

The UT2 is Collings' 2-style mahogany tenor ukulele. The UT2 comes standard with the Collings trademark ''haircut'' peghead shape and ivoroid body binding with black/white purfling. With a figured mahogany top, back and side wood, the beauty of its wood and enhanced appointments rivals its sonic complexity.

The bindings on this Uke are tortoise, making the body look very classy and understated.  An Indian Rosewood fretboard and bridge complete the package.

Collings Ukes also feature a highly innovative tuning system by Pegheds.  These tuners are geared and offer much more control and stability than traditional friction tuners.  The 4:1 gear reduction allows strings to be tuned more easily and accurately than traditional wood pegs (or Caspari-type mechanisms which require screw drivers or special keys). Tune confidently and securely with the left hand while playing open strings; even during performance!  PEGHEDS tuners return the fine-tuning function to pegs. Strings slide more freely over the smooth, wide nut than over the comparatively sharp edge of the bridge, where stress is concentrated and equilibrium of tension on either side is more difficult to achieve.

Collings C10 Sitka Spruce and Mahogany Custom Sunburst

Hear This Instrument: Collings C10 Sitka Spruce and Mahogany Custom Sunburst
Recorded In-House on a Sony PCM-D50 handheld recorder with no compression or eq.
Collings C10 Sitka Spruce and Mahogany Custom Sunburst

Based on guitars first introduced around the same time as the OM, the Collings C10 is a leaner alternative, with the narrow waist and small upper bout resulting in a precise, focused response.  The smaller upper bout is gratifying and a true dream to play. It's this unique body size that allows the C10 to project a more focused mid-range then other smaller bodied guitars. This mid-range is combined with a crisp low-end and rounded, mellow trebles.  Of all the acoustic models Collings produces, the C10 is perhaps the easiest for electric guitarists to adapt to, thanks in part to the more rounded neck profile.

The Collings C10 comes standard with a Sitka Spruce top and Mahogany back and sides. Sitka  is ideal for players who find Adirondack Red Spruce too punchy, bright, and stiff - but do not want to sacrifice on clarity. Sitka Spruce is a versatile topwood that accentuates the warm round aspects of the guitar's tone. The top end is sweet and crisp; with a driving, focused midrange and low-end. It strums with the best of them, but has a neck that flatpicks beautifully across the board. There is a reason Colling's are revered for their C10's!

Although this instrument bares a resemblance of a C10 Deluxe, this is a standard C10 with custom appointments such as, 1 3/4" nut width which gives you plenty of room for complex chord shapes. The standard ivoroid binding  on the body are complimented by the custom sunburst top perfectly, providing a very classy finishing touch. This guitar also features upgrade Nickel Waverly tuners.

Bourgeois Vintage 00 Sitka Spruce and Indian Rosewood

Hear This Instrument: Bourgeois Vintage 00 Sitka Spruce and Indian Rosewood
Recorded In-House on a Sony PCM-D50 handheld recorder with no compression or eq.
Bourgeois Vintage 00 Sitka Spruce and Indian Rosewood

The Bourgeois Vintage 00 is a modest guitar with simplified appointments with a classic combination of tonewoods featuring a Sitka Spruce top that is paired with Indian Rosewod back and sides. Although this guitar has a very versatile tone that sounds great onstage or in the studio the comfort of the 00 body shape makes for the ultimate "Couch Guitar"!

Sitka Spruce is a top tonewood that is favorable for many players, as it is one of the most versatile tonewoods available. In regards to stiffness, Sitka is much more flexible than Adirondack, therefore exhibiting increased responsiveness and a richer low end when played at moderate levels. While not quite as powerful for the heaviest of pickers, Sitka lends itself quite nicely for fingerstyle playing as well, allowing you to cover much more musical playing styles than an Adirondack dreadnought will be capable of... not to mention that many players simply don't play hard enough to comfortably drive an Adirondack top. Sitka Spruce is in many ways the perfect compromise!

Regarding the tone, Dana has chosen the wood specifically for the way it sounds, rather than it's appearance, although this guitar features both a top with beatiful silking as well as back and sides  that look amazing.  Although this guitar features standard tonewood combinations this guitar produces a tone very unique ... especially after Dana's tuning and bracing techniques.  It's hard to imagine a nicer sound coming out of a 00... the guitar sounds much larger than it's small size and is smooth and balanced.  An instant shop favorite!

This particular set of Indian Rosewood is one the most unique, both in figuring and color, we have seen yet! With varying shades of red that are very rich and robust, there are even some areas that have slight burgundy hue which is complimented by light golden brown streaks.

The Benefits of the Adirondack Bracing that Dana uses on all of his guitar can't be ignored, adding not only responsiveness, but a new level of detail and clarity. The Adirondack Bracing helps to stiffen the top, making it that much more powerful with more headroom and overall volume as well as providing a very focused tone that is only complimented by the 00's body size.

Collings 002H Sitka Spruce and Indian Rosewood

Hear This Instrument: Collings 002H Sitka Spruce and Indian Rosewood
Recorded In-House on a Sony PCM-D50 handheld recorder with no compression or eq.
Collings 002H Sitka Spruce and Indian Rosewood

The Collings 002H series guitars produce tone that is balanced and precise... from simple vocal accompaniment to fingerpicking to ragtime solos, this guitar is well suited for a wide variety of playing styles. The 002H is a guitar shape that was first designed around the time of the Civil War to keep up with the louder banjos and mandolins of the time. The comfortable size and timeless appearance of the 002H is matched by the ease of playing that a wider neck and shorter string scale afford.

With a Sitka Spruce top and Indian Rosewood back and sides, this guitar has a clear, focused tone that is rich in lows without overpowering the balanced high end. The short scale length makes for a guitar that is almost effortless to play. The Sitka Spruce top on this instrument responds well to fingerstyle and moderate flatpicking, with round notes and lush chords up and down the neck. The Collings 002H models are always some of the most versatile instruments in the shop, and this one is no different.... it will be right at home in jam circles, on stage, or in the studio, regardless the style of music.

Bourgeois Custom OM Short Scale All Mahogany

Recorded In-House on a Sony PCM-D50 handheld recorder with no compression or eq.
Bourgeois Custom OM Short Scale All Mahogany

Dana Bourgeois has done it yet again!  This custom OM, built with an all-mahogany body, is another perfect example of the exquisite build style that Dana is famous for.  This guitar is voiced so that it is remarkably rich in tone with a great thump on the low end that we didn't expect to hear.  Dana tap tunes all the tops as he is voicing them to ensure they respond evenly across the spectrum, making his guitars feel a little more "alive" than some other builders.

The all mahogany body produces a tone with lots of definition for fingerstyle playing. A surprising amount of low end means chords are rich and lush, balancing the clear high end of the mahogany quite nicely. This guitar is quite responsive whether played soft or loud... it maintains balance throughout the dynamic spectrum. The Benefits of the Adirondack Bracing that Dana uses on all of his guitar an't be ignored, adding not only responsiveness, but a new level of detail and clarity. The Adirondack Bracing helps to stiffen the top, making it that much more powerful with more headroom and overall volume.

Simple appointments such as tortoise bindings and a sunburst fiber rosette give the guitar a very classy appearance, matching the tone quite nicely.

Pre-Owned: 2002 Blanchard Bristlecone Bearclaw Italian Spruce

Hear This Instrument: 2002 Blanchard Bristlecone Bearclaw Italian Spruce
Recorded In-House on a Sony PCM-D50 handheld recorder with no compression or eq.
2002 Blanchard Bristlecone Bearclaw Italian Spruce

Mark Blanchard began his career as a Luthier while studying physics at the University of California in Santa Cruz, California in the early 1980's.  His fascination with stringed instruments began by helping friends adjusting their guitars and doing repairs. He continued to do repair work for many years and in 1994 he began designing and building his own line of guitars, appropriately called  Blanchard Guitars.

Mark Blanchard works on each guitar on an individual basis with various tools and Machinery he has been collecting for 25 years. To this day he still builds entirely by himself in his fully climate controlled workshop in Northwest Montana.

The Blanchard Bristlecone was the first and continues to be Blanchard's most popular model. It is slightly larger than most Traditional Orchestra Models, with a 15.25" lower bout width this  guitar has an incredibly clear and balanced sound with a surprising amount of volume.

The Ziricote back & sides offers more clarity and note definition than Brazilian Rosewood – yet a similar natural reverb heard in the overtones. Coupled with the Bearclaw Italian Spruce top, the bass thump is accentuated, with lush mid tones, and the treble response is bell like. Overall, a brilliant package, offering quick string response, excellent note definition & clarity without being harsh. While this is primarly a fingerstyle guitar it is incredibly versatile.

Collings City Limits Deluxe Quilt Top Iced Tea Sunburst with Jason Lollar Humbuckers and Wraparound Bridge

Hear This Instrument: Collings City Limits Deluxe Quilt Top Iced Tea Sunburst with Jason Lollar Humbuckers and Wraparound Bridge
Recorded In-House on a Sony PCM-D50 handheld recorder with no compression or eq.
Collings City Limits Deluxe Quilt Top Iced Tea Sunburst with Jason Lollar Humbuckers and Wraparound Bridge

Bill Collings has been making some of the most highly regarded acoustic guitars in the world for quite some time, so when he decided to build electric guitars, musicians were chomping at the bit to see what would happen. The flawless construction, the incredible attention to detail, and the Collings quality are all here. Collings has redesigned a classic guitar with players in mind and the now famous meticulous construction, and attention to detail is nothing short of astonishing. This City Limits Deluxe with a Premium Quilted Maple top, is the ultimate Les Paul and with Lollar Humbuckers, this guitar was born for rock and roll!

From Collings' website: "Crafted with the finest seasoned maple and mahogany, the CL Deluxe is built for tone. Lightweight, resonant mahogany combined with a carefully hand-set mortise and tenon neck joint bring tonal complexity and sustain to the table in spades. Sleekly contoured for comfort and style, we've brought new life to an American classic." We, honestly, could not agree more. The CL Deluxe is clearly influenced by classic American solidbodies of the past, and to say they hit their mark is an understatement.

The body is cleverly designed with ergonomic contouring at both sides of the waist. This commonly overlooked feature is quite brilliant, making already effortless playability even more comfortable. Weighing in at a just over 8 lb., the CL Deluxe is easy to manage and perfectly balanced. Whether on the stage or in the studio, the CL Deluxe feels right at home. The neck profile is a well rounded C shape that is unique to the Collings lineup. The neck joint is angled toward the cutaway; following the body lines. This slight change fills your hand in a more natural way, easing the curse that other single cutaway guitars have. Playability is what we have come to expect from a Collings - effortless and untroubled up and down the fingerboard. Combine that with Collings reputation for intonation perfection - and you have a force to be reckoned with.

Collings has collaborated with Jason Lollar for all their pickups. While the particular pickups they use are specially wound for Collings, they are darn close to his standard Imperial Humbuckers. Lollar manages to capture the airy top end, tight lows, balanced midrange, and complex overtones of the best original PAF pickups. In reviews they are consistently given high marks for their balanced frequency response. Unbalanced coils keep the bottom end tight for the amount of fullness the pickups have, overtones build after each note is played. Alnico 5 magnets are de-gaussed to specific levels, unique to the neck and bridge positions. The sound Collings has developed with these pickups can certainly be described as mature. The neck position pushes out a lovely warmth and depth - ideal for jazz chording or chunky blues. None of the pesky midrange honkiness that can be found with bridge humbuckers is present. The bridge pickup is certainly hotter and more aggressive, but maintains full-bodied presence without any harshness. Use of the individual volume and tone knobs to balance and pair the two pickups against one another yields a practically endless variety of voices and tones.

Collings is renowned for their nitro finishes on acoustic guitars - and the story remains the same here. The finish on the CL Deluxe is nothing short of perfect - incredibly thin and flat as can be. The thin nitro finish allows this guitar to breathe and resonate like the aged vintage pieces of old. The unplugged acoustic qualities the CL Deluxe exhibits are simply remarkable. It's the little considerations like this that will satisfy even the most discerning of vintage fans. The beautiful quilted Maple top is hand-sprayed with a flawless iced tea sunburst, giving it an instant classic LP look. Aesthetic balance is a bit of a passion for Mr. Bill Collings, and each of his electrics exhibit their own understated style - unique from model to model. The fit and finish of the CL Deluxe may be astonishing to some - but it is what we have come to expect from the folks at Collings. No detail is left incomplete, yet nothing is overdone or exploited. The body is bound with grained ivoroid, a refreshing change from blindingly stark white plastic. The truss rod cover, tuning buttons, pickup knobs and covers all share this same material - and its one of the many features that set Collings apart.

Bourgeois SJ Custom Adirondack Top with Mahogany Back and Sides

Hear This Instrument: Bourgeois SJ Custom Adirondack Top with Mahogany Back and Sides
Recorded In-House on a Sony PCM-D50 handheld recorder with no compression or eq.
Bourgeois SJ Custom Adirondack Top with Mahogany Back and Sides

We are always pleased to have the Bourgeois Small Jumbo model in the shop.  Our first custom ordered ones flew off the shelf so we knew we had to have more.  This one with a sunburst top does not disappoint!

Variations of this body style have traditionally graced a variety of guitars including smaller archtops, rhythm workhorses for accompaniment of singers like the Everly Brothers, and more recently, fingerstyle guitars for virtuoso solo performers. The Bourgeois SJ has the classic combination of Adirondack Spruce with Mahogany to produce a full, rich tonal palette with a medium-wide 1 23/32" nut and a 25" scale.

The tone produces from this Bourgeois is rich in trebles with a balanced and powerful low end and slightly less midrange.  It excels when played fingerstyle and loves to be strummed as well. As always, the build clearly reflects Dana's dedication and impeccable eye for subtle detail. The Small Jumbo fills the gap between the OMs and the dreadnoughts - proving to be one of the most versatile body sizes offered.

The Small Jumbo features an X-braced top to enhance lower register articulation. Further appointments include a gorgeous sunburst that was applied by Dana himself, with a firestripe pickguard that complements the color of the top perfectly, and nickel plated Waverly tuners with Ivoroid buttons to further enhance the timeless look of this guitar.

The unique body size, measuring 15 3/8 across the lower bout, is quite comfortable to play. Your right arm wraps comfortably around the body without any discomfort or extra reach. The scale measures in at 25, and is a perfect length for this guitar. Fretting is a quite effortless task, especially when bending strings. This guitar would shine for a songwriter in need of a versatile workhorse that gives an edge above the competition. It is also perfectly suited to fingerstyle or strumming, without missing a beat.

Recorded In-House on a Sony PCM-D50 handheld recorder with no compression or eq.
Huss & Dalton Custom 00 Engelmann and Cocobolo

Huss and Dalton's OO produces a surprising amount of volume out of a small bodied guitar. Very clear and balanced in tone, it is braced for light gauge strings and designed with the fingerstyle player or those a lighter touch in mind. We often commission Huss and Dalton to build us a 00 with an Engelmann Spruce top for that very reason. The response of Engelmann is perfectly suited for such players. So, when the opportunity to pair Engelmann with a stunning piece of Cocobolo came along - we were excited to say the least.

Cocobolo characteristically has poweful low overtones resulting in a complex bottom end. The overall effect is also a bell like tone with clear, slow decaying harmonics. Fast and responsive, it articulate with ample note distinction and a rich low end. This particular set of Cocobolo has very deep red streaks alternating with lighter red streaks, the robust Red colors are complimented by beautiful contrasting black streaks. The custom Koa bindings really compliment the Engelmann top and Cocobolo back and sides.

Pre-Owned: 2000 Santa Cruz Custom D-45 European Spruce and Brazilian Rosewood

Hear This Instrument: 2000 Santa Cruz Custom D-45 European Spruce and Brazilian Rosewood
Recorded In-House on a Sony PCM-D50 handheld recorder with no compression or eq.
2000 Santa Cruz Custom D-45 European Spruce and Brazilian Rosewood

The Dreadnought: the design that introduced boutique lutherie. In the early 1970's, it was the rare player who would consider any guitar smaller than a dreadnought. Stellar players were handicapped by the traditional D's predominate bass and thin trebles. The strength of the typical dreadnought guitar is in its power and volume, which are achieved by the guitar's large body size. The increased air space also gives the instrument a predisposition to the bass range, an asset to some playing styles and a detriment to others.

The Santa Cruz Guitar Company Dreadnought Model was carefully conceived to accommodate the modern player's need for sophisticated balance with more substance in midrange and treble. To deliver these qualities in the acceptable dreadnought-sized body required a very non-traditional approach, as compared to the factory offerings of the day. Using time honored lutherie skills, SCGC created a Trojan Horse - familiar on the outside, dangerous on the inside. SCGC's innovative D Model remains a mainstay of artists who require acoustic volume without compromising the quality of higher frequencies.

This custom Santa Cruz D45 features a beautiful set of straight grained Brazilian Rosewood back and sides paired with an exquisite European Spruce top that does have figuring patterns of Bearclaw behind the bridge. The full 45 style inlays only add to the collect-ability and uniqueness of this phenomenal instrument. The sound is absolutely sublime. The European top provides plenty of power, however, this instrument's power lies in it's subtlety and finesse. Barely touch it and you will be rewarded with a clear bass response that you can feel in your chest. Single note lines are round in profile, yet defined. It is as if the overtones know exactly when to get out of the way of the next overtone! Strummed chordal passages are defined yet lush, a natural by product of the Brazilian back and sides.

This particular Santa Cruz D Model has a unique Tapered bracing with a Scalloped Cross brace on the bass side. This unique bracing pattern allows for a very balanced sound with enhanced bass response that allows for a more versatile tone compared to traditionally braced dreadnoughts.

Not only does this guitar have incredible tone it also features many custom elegant appointments such as an Abalone Rosette, Multicolor Marquetry backstrip, Mahogany Neck with a Custom Vintage Neck Profile and Ivoroid Biding, Ebony fretboard with 45 style inlays and Purfling, Ebony bridge with custom 45 style inlays, Ebony Bridge Pins with Pearl dots, Brazilian Rosewood headstock overlay with 45 style torch inlay, and Gold plated tuners.

This guitar is in excellent condition with just a few minor scratches to the top from finger style play which can be seen in the photographs below. There are also a few minor scratches on the back which can be seen in detail in the photographs below, none of these scratches are through the finish. Additionally, this instrument has been PLeK'd by our friends at Glaser Instruments here in Nashville, for the ultimate in playability! Original Hardshell Case Included.

SOLD: National NRP Black Rust Steel 14 Fret

Hear This Instrument: National NRP Black Rust Steel 14 Fret
Recorded In-House on a Sony PCM-D50 handheld recorder with no compression or eq.
National NRP Black Rust Steel 14 Fret

National's Black Rust NRP looks like it just came out of the swamp, perfectly suited for those hot southern blues licks. This National features the new color, Black Rust and the finish is quite stunning. Nationals have been played by many blues legends, but they definitely were not playing one with a finish like this. No two of the Black Rust finishes are alike. The best part is, you don't have to wait 50 years for a vintage finish, you can have one right now!

This model is a 14 fret version, although a 12 fret model is also available. Each Black Rust instrument is finished with a multi-staged hand-textured finish for an individual look and semi-smooth surface profile. Capturing the look and feel of an original 14 fret National Duolian, the thin-gauge steel body is highlighted by rolled "f" holes, a formed back, and period-correct, traditional ribbed coverplate. Each mahogany neck clears 14 frets to the body and features an unbound ebony fretboard complete with mother of pearl position markers. Vintage style plain tuners, ebony nut, and "National" stamped headstock complete the look of this classic.

With the ebony fretboard and the ebony nut, notes practically jump of the fretboard and chase that hell-hound on your trail down. Classic blues fingerpicking sounds like it is coming from a porch in Mississippi on a hot summer evening. Authentic in it's tone and in it's appearance, the Black Rust NRP drives itself to the Delta!
