Collings CJ Madagascar Rosewood and Adirondack Spruce with Varnish Finish
Madagascar Rosewood is a tonewood that is nearly just as rare as Brazilian recently and we have been anxiously awaiting this killer custom Collings CJ, built with one of the last 3 sets of Madagascar that Collings had. The Collings Jumbo, or CJ, is Colling's version of the classic slope-shouldered dreadnought, a shape that has enjoyed renewed popularity in recent years for its notable versatility and power. Adirondack Spruce drives the top on this monster with plenty of upgrades such as Adirondack bracing, a Brazilian Rosewood fretboard and bridge, flourish peghead, 1 3/4" nut width, a hand-rubbed varnish finish.
On an open strum, the words clarity and richness come right to mind. The trebles are clean and defined without overpowering the overall richness of the bottom-end. Adirondack Spruce on the top with bracing to match makes this guitar incredibly powerful with virtually unlimited headroom and plenty of Adirondack crispness. Adirondack bracing is a popular upgrade at Artisan. Being lighter, and stiffer than Sitka Spruce, Adirondack bracing makes the top more responsive making it that much more powerful. The slope shoulder design allows this guitar to be played fingerstyle as well without sacrificing any flatpicking demands you could throw at this instrument. Volume will not be a problem with this guitar in a jam session... it will dominate other string band instruments!
As if those features weren't enough, this guitar was finished with Collings' hand-rubbed varnish. Varnish is a softer and therefore more flexible finish material and allows the instrument to vibrate more freely and can produce a more responsive instrument with a greater depth of tone. The varnish process takes a lot more time, both in application and drying... the difference in tone, however, makes the process worth the trouble. The varnish creates a faster response with warmer trebles and a greater overall dynamic range. The low end is amplified while maintaining stunning clarity and definition.
Of all of the Colling's body styles, this is the most requested with a sunburst and it sets off the body just perfectly. Combined with the Brazilian Rosewood fretboard and bridge, the look of this guitar is no less than stunning.
