When Maton launched their Custom Shop in the 90's, their W.A. May 808 model was designed as tribute to the late Maton founder – Bill May. You don’t have to look very far to see many of the ideas and concepts that were close to the heart of Maton’s founder, originally the first model added to their CS collection.
This iconic model carries over today, in their new Master Built L.E. May, a tribute to Linda May, born to Vera and Bill May the year Maton Guitars began. The deep-body 000 or “Traditional” shape that this incarnation takes on is arguably it’s most classical and stylistic form to date. The body style offers the player substantial full-sized presence, with versatile tone, in a very comfortable guitar.
The May Signature 3 layered Deco style headstock sits atop this model proudly as it did on Bill's very first Maton guitar (still in the Maton Museum 70 years on). The L.E. May Features a European Spruce Top with Figured Blackwood back and sides. A stunning and often favored combination of timber that is truly symbolic of Maton’s Australian heritage.
Satin Box Wood body binding is a species also native to Australia. This unique tree grows under the canopy of Victorian Blackwood. When the Blackwood tree has grown to maturity and is harvested, the Satin Box tree comes into its own.
The body depth on the L.E. May is similar to the 808 models, measuring 4-5/8" deep at the end block. It is deeper than standard 000’s and as such creates a bigger voice with plenty of bottom end, with a full register of sonic ranges on show.
